Thomas Bernhard. How to become a Nestbeschmutzer (»nest-fouler«)?

Both in Austria and internationally, Thomas Bernhard is still regarded as one of the harshest literary critics that his country has ever produced. Some sections of the Austrian media and political class (especially tabloids and some politicians) therefore denounced him as a »Nestbeschmutzer« (i.e. someone who criticises their own country) during his lifetime. It was precisely these attacks that cemented his high standing on the other side of the political divide, which was sympathetic to critical, (left-wing) liberal points of view. This project seeks to explore in detail the various stages of this development, which coincide in no small part with the so-called »scandals« associated with Thomas Bernhard – from the first trials in Salzburg through to »highlights« such as the scandal surrounding the presentation of the Austrian Outstanding Artist Award, the banning of »Woodcutters« and, finally, the several months of controversy that preceded the premiere of »Heldenplatz« (»Heroes’ Square«) at Vienna’s Burgtheater (Austrian National Theatre). The main objective is to clarify – and this aspect has thus far not been researched in sufficient detail – the extent to which Bernhard influenced/controlled/stage-managed his own public/media image, and whether he himself played a part in shaping his image of a lone wolf and a victim of the ignorance/indolence/tyranny of the (chiefly Austrian) state. Last but not least, it is interesting to consider what role was played by his German publisher Siegfried Unseld and the director of the premiere Claus Peymann.
