Projektskizze

The reception of Roman portraiture in French sculpture (16th to 19th cent.)

My Morphomata research project is concerned with the exploration of the stylistic as well as iconographical references to Roman portraiture made by modern French portrait sculptors (16th to 19th cent.). This phenomenon does not only appear in representations of contemporaries, but also in those of persons of the past. These receptions of antique forms seem to be related to different intentions. To grasp them better, my project intends to assemble a representative number of works permitting various contextualizations. These will be obtained by analyzing all types of information available (especially literary sources related to the commission, the places of exhibition, the remarks of contemporaries, and the biography of the represented person). Due to these ambitious contextualizations, the examination of French portraits inspired by antique forms promises new insights in the afterlife of Roman portraiture.
