Urban green constitutes a tangible manifestation of current processes of urban transformation both in the Global South and Global North. While all kinds of urban space - including parks, forests, community gardens, tree-lined roads or many-flowered roundabouts - provide ecosystem services to the city, their use, conservation, preservation, and development is often contested. The GSSC Urban Green Initiative organized the Public Lectures and Kick-Off Workshop to trigger off a critical discussion on urban green within the Global South Studies Center and beyond. The interdisciplinary workshop brings together researchers from the Global South with scholars from the University of Cologne, urban green activists and other fellows interested in urban green.
