Leo Spitzer’s Cologne Years: An Early Zenith?

In a celebratory lecture Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht (Stanford) reminds Morphomata, on the occasion of its tenth, “little” anniversary and in the context of the university’s anniversary celebrations, of the scholar of Romance literature Leo Spitzer, who taught at the University of Cologne from 1930 until his emigration to Istanbul. Going beyond philological comparative study, Spitzer already recognized the task of cultural research in “bringing close what is distant and distancing what is close.”
